From one bill to two fair shares
Solar Split measures who used what, every few minutes, then applies the tariff and the sharing rules you agreed.
What you need
Solar Split can only work out a fair split if at least one dwelling on the connection has its own consumption meter. That is a sub-meter measuring that dwelling's own use, such as a Shelly EM or an Eastron Modbus meter. The other dwelling's use is worked out as the site total minus the metered dwelling.
A meter on at least one dwelling
It reads one home's own consumption. A second meter on the other home makes the split more accurate, but one is enough to start.
A way to read the whole site
Solar Split also needs total site consumption, or grid import and export, plus solar production. A solar inverter or gateway with consumption clamps does this, and so does a whole-site meter.
Without a meter on a dwelling the split cannot be calculated. The Home Kit contains the hub (a Raspberry Pi, power supply, case and setup card) but not meters. Meters are read for information only.
The meter must be one of the supported models listed on the Equipment page; unsupported meters cannot be read by the hub.
Plug in the hub
The hub is a small computer that joins your home network. There is no electrical work and nothing to install in the switchboard.
It reads your meters and inverter locally
Readings stay on your network until they are sent, securely, as small batches. If the internet drops, the hub keeps them and sends them later.
See the split
The app shows live power, history and a monthly statement. Every number on the statement traces back to stored readings.
What goes into the split
Each home's own use
Every interval, the hub records what each home imported, plus what the solar system generated and what the battery gave or took. It stores running totals, not just snapshots, so gaps can be checked.
The tariff
Time-of-use bands, supply charge, feed-in credit and public holidays come from your retailer plan. You can edit them if your plan changes.
Your sharing rules
Agree how solar is shared, how the supply charge is divided, and how battery energy is credited. Solar Split applies those rules the same way every month.
Checks against the retailer
Totals are reconciled against the metered import on the retailer bill, so the two shares add up to the cent.
What Solar Split is not
It is a calculator and a record. It does not sell you electricity, send bills, hold money or change how your home is metered. The meters it reads are for information only.
